About Industrial Design

Industrial design ensures the integration of creative thinking with such concepts as function, form, value, and identity for the benefit of society, the user, and the producer. This program gives students the education they need in their professional lives to design and develop innovative, useful, reliable, and appropriate products in terms of aesthetics, in line with social and cultural values. Industrial design handles the social values system, the results of global interaction, and the expectations of consumers. On the other hand, it is used in designing the information gathered as a result of the research on trend analyses resulting from the national and global economics, consumption culture, and competition process. In this framework, it is targeted to broaden the general point of view of the designer in such fields as marketing, corporate identity, determination of the strategy of product representing the brand, along with primary product design project information and product design culture.
Industrial design is treated in the scope of new product development. It includes the design of any kinds of objects open to mass production, in the market of consumption, from the electronics and communication sector to furniture, white goods, jewelry, packaging, and automotive sectors. The main functions in the process of product design and development can be summarized as the preparation of product ideas and details; visualization of the original idea to be then shared with the other disciplines related to the process of product development, and the general coordination, during the whole process, of the teamwork required for the product to be developed in the scope of production technology. Whereas it is an industrial discipline and a strategic element of competition in the functional and formal identification of products, Industrial Design can also be defined as a creative profession contributing to the development of the materialistic culture of contemporary society. Industrial Design is a creative profession including the construction of the visual, physical, and functional aspects of the product-man relation and the interpretation of the possibilities and limitations of modern technology on a product and/or service basis. Whereas it is an industrial discipline and a strategic element of competition in the functional and formal identification of products, this design field could also be described as a profession contributing to the development of the materialistic culture of our era.
The Industrial Design education provided by our department conforms to international standards; the research we conduct constantly produces insights into the service of society and humanity; in line with national expectations and needs, we aim at technological and scientific development; and we strive for the leading education and research institution position among the stakeholders.
Our goals are: to raise "Industrial Designers" by giving graduate, postgraduate, and doctorate education in line with international standards, that are capable of success in working for industrial and research organizations, especially in such fields as R&D, design, production, and application; who are creative, open to change and self-development, prone to industrial relations, who can bring interdisciplinary interaction and teamwork at the forefront of their works, who have a comprehensive knowledge of social, cultural, industrial and technologic developments, that incorporate a sense of professional ethics and a sense of responsibility, who, through the innovative products they design, assist our society in attaining the desired quality of life and who thus contribute to the social capital, and who have what it takes to be leaders. We also try our best to offer solutions to the problems of the national industry by taking place in research that ensures the production of knowledge and technology at the international level and thus make sure experts are raised up to meet national needs.
The program's educational focus is to combine technical competence with artistic creativity. All the same, the department's education programs have been tailored according to the individual fields of interest of students to provide them with a design formation in professional standards. The objective here is to give students a basic art culture and design formation; help them understand, in artistic creation, which reasons lead to which impacts, at what level with which tools, and develop the design creativity.
